Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle form of massage used to relieve inflammation related to lymphedema. Lymphedema is a common side effect of many health conditions. It’s also common among people recovering from cancer treatments, most notably, breast cancer surgery because surgeons remove several lymph nodes during the procedure.

Typically, your lymphatic system collects your lymph and returns it to your heart via a network of vessels and nodes. When something disrupts this process, lymph collects in your arms, legs, ankles or other parts of your body, making them swell.

A massage therapist uses lymphatic drainage techniques to move lymph from your tissues to your lymph nodes, which eases the swelling.

What conditions are treated with lymphatic drainage massage?

Healthcare providers mainly use manual lymphatic drainage to relieve lymphedema after breast cancer surgery. They also use it to treat lymphedema related to health conditions like:

Lymphatic massage is also a popular cosmetic treatment. Facial lymphatic drainage may increase blood circulation and reduce puffiness in your face, giving your skin a glowing boost.

Deep Tissue Massage

A deep tissue massage focuses on targeting the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to release chronic tension and improve mobility. It uses slower, more forceful strokes to reach muscles deeper in the body. The pressure is typically firmer than in a Swedish massage, and the therapist may concentrate on specific areas of tension, using techniques like friction or trigger point therapy to release knots and tight spots. This type of massage is often sought for relieving pain or muscle stiffness from injury, chronic stress, or overuse.

In contrast, a Swedish massage is a more general, relaxing massage that targets the surface layers of muscles. It involves long, flowing strokes, kneading, and circular movements designed to improve circulation, reduce stress, and promote relaxation. The pressure can range from light to medium, and it’s typically gentler than deep tissue massage. Swedish massage is great for relaxation, improving flexibility, and overall wellness.

The main difference lies in the intensity and the depth of pressure. Deep tissue is about addressing specific muscle pain or tension with more intensity, while Swedish massage is more about relaxation and general body wellness with a lighter touch.

Swedish /Circulatory Massage

Circulatory massage is a manual technique that improves blood and lymph circulation, which can help with:

  • Relaxation: Relieves tension and stress in muscles

  • Healing: Promotes healing and recovery from injuries

  • Tissue oxygenation: Delivers more oxygen and nutrients to tissues

  • Waste removal: Facilitates the removal of waste products and toxins from the body

  • Improved body function: Lowers blood pressure and improves overall well-being

Pre Natal Massage

A prenatal massage is a customized massage that's designed to help pregnant women feel better and reduce pain and swelling:
Pain relief: Prenatal massages can help with aches and pains in the lower back, hips, legs, and other areas that are common during pregnancy.
Improved circulation: Prenatal massages can help improve blood flow to the mother and baby.
Reduced stress: Prenatal massages can help reduce stress hormones and increase oxytocin and serotonin, which can help with mood regulation.
Better sleep: Prenatal massages can help improve sleep, which can be difficult during pregnancy.
Reduced anxiety and depression: Prenatal massages can help reduce anxiety and depression.
Prenatal Massage During Pregnancy: Benefits & Safety
Prenatal massages are usually gentler than other massage techniques and are adapted to the changing needs of the pregnant body. During a prenatal massage, you'll lie on your side or back while a trained therapist uses gentle strokes to massage areas that are sore or swollen. The therapist will avoid areas and pressure points that are unsafe during pregnancy.
You should get your doctor or midwife's approval before getting a prenatal massage. Prenatal massages are generally considered safe after the first trimester.

Reflexology

A reflexology massage is a type of massage therapy that involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, and ears, based on the belief that these areas correspond to different organs and body systems throughout the body, with the goal of promoting relaxation and overall well-being by stimulating these "reflex points" through pressure techniques; essentially, it's a massage focused on specific areas to potentially influence other parts of the body.
Key points about reflexology massage:
Focus on specific points:
Unlike a traditional massage, reflexology targets specific areas on the feet, hands, and ears that are thought to correspond to different organs and body systems.
Pressure application:
Practitioners use their thumbs and fingers to apply varying levels of pressure to these reflex points.
Theory of zones:
The practice is based on the idea that the body is divided into zones, and stimulating points in one zone can affect a related area of the body.
Potential benefits:
Reflexology is often used to promote relaxation, relieve stress, alleviate pain, improve sleep, and support overall wellness.
